Welcome to Victory Lap Trail — a GPS and QR-based location check-in experience exploring the historic motorsport heritage of Daytona Beach and beyond.

This guide covers everything you need to know to get the most out of the app, including how each feature works, known technical limitations, safety guidelines, and important disclaimers about location accuracy and historical information.

Creating Your Account & First Check-In

1
Create an account
Tap Register on the login screen. Enter your name, a username (this appears on the leaderboard), your email, and a password. No email confirmation is required — you're in immediately.
2
Choose a Lap
After logging in you'll see the Lap Picker. Select which trail you want to explore. Each Lap is a curated set of locations with its own theme. You can switch Laps at any time using the button in the top bar.
3
Allow location access
For GPS check-ins, allow the app to access your location when prompted. This is optional — you can always check in by scanning QR codes instead. See the GPS section below for tips on getting accurate results.
4
Visit a location & check in
Head to any marked location on the map. When you're within range, a Check In button will appear in the location's info sheet. Tap it to record your visit, earn points, and build your streak.
5
Track your progress
Visit the History tab to see all your check-ins, your current streak, and total points. Check the Leaderboard tab to see how you rank against other explorers.

What You Can Do

🗺️
Interactive Map
All trail locations are pinned on a live map. Tap any pin to see the location name, description, point value, and your check-in status. Visited locations appear in a different color.
📍
GPS Check-In
When your device detects you're within the check-in radius of a location (typically 50–150 meters), the Check In button activates automatically. No tapping required to trigger the prompt.
📷
QR Code Check-In
Each location has a unique QR code. Scan it using the QR tab in the app. This works even without GPS or location permission — great for indoor venues or when GPS is unreliable.
🏆
Leaderboard
A live ranking of all players by total points. Your entry is highlighted. Leaderboard updates in real time as check-ins happen across all users.
🔥
Streaks
Check in at least once per day to build a streak. Streaks reset if you go a full day without checking in at any location. Longer streaks unlock achievements and bonus points.
🎖️
Achievements
Unlock badges for milestones like your first check-in, visiting 5 or 10 locations, maintaining a streak, or reaching point thresholds. Achievements award bonus points when unlocked.
🔄
Multiple Laps
Switch between different trail themes (e.g. Classic Daytona, FiDi Pub Lap) using the Switch Lap button in the top bar. Your score and achievements carry across all Laps.
📱
Install as App
Add Victory Lap Trail to your home screen for a full-screen, app-like experience. On iPhone: tap the Share icon → "Add to Home Screen." On Android: tap the browser menu → "Install App."

Getting Accurate GPS Results

ℹ️
How GPS check-in works
The app uses your device's GPS to calculate the distance between you and each trail location. When you're within the check-in radius (shown on each location card), the Check In button becomes active. Check-in range varies by location — typically between 50 and 150 meters.
→
Enable location permission
On iPhone: tap the lock icon in Safari's address bar → Location → Allow. On Android: allow location access when prompted, or go to Settings → Apps → Browser → Permissions → Location.
→
Wait for GPS to lock
When you first open the app outdoors, GPS may take 10–30 seconds to acquire a strong signal. Watch the GPS indicator in the top bar — it turns green when your location is actively tracked. Don't try to check in until it's green.
→
Go outside for best accuracy
GPS accuracy drops significantly indoors, underground, or near tall buildings. For best results, step outside and away from obstructions. Urban canyons (streets lined with tall buildings) can cause 50–100m of drift.
→
If GPS won't lock, use QR
Every location has a QR code as a backup. If GPS is unreliable at a specific site (e.g. a parking garage, indoor venue, or heavily shaded area), simply scan the QR code instead — it requires no location access at all.
⚠️
GPS drift & accuracy limitations
Consumer smartphone GPS is accurate to approximately 3–10 meters under ideal conditions, but can drift by 50 meters or more near buildings, in tunnels, or under heavy tree cover. If the app shows you as out of range when you're clearly at a location, wait 30 seconds for the signal to stabilize, or use the QR code check-in instead.

Scanning QR Codes

1
Open the QR tab
Tap the QR Scan tab at the top of the app. Tap Start Camera to activate your device's camera.
2
Allow camera access
Your browser will ask for camera permission the first time. Tap Allow. If you accidentally denied it, go to your browser settings and re-enable camera access for this site.
3
Point at the QR code
Hold your phone steady and center the QR code within the scanning frame. Good lighting helps — if scanning is slow, move to a brighter area or turn on your flashlight.
4
Check-in is automatic
Once the QR code is detected, your check-in is processed immediately. You'll see a success message and your points will be awarded. No additional button press needed.
💡
QR codes also work via URL
Each QR code contains a web link. If you scan a Victory Lap Trail QR code with your phone's native camera app (outside the app), it will open the app directly and trigger your check-in automatically.

Points, Streaks & Achievements

Check-in points — each location awards a set number of points when you check in. More significant or harder-to-reach locations typically award more points.
One check-in per location per day — you can only earn points at the same location once per calendar day. Returning the next day resets this.
Streaks — check in at any location at least once per day to maintain your streak. Missing a full calendar day (midnight to midnight) resets it to zero.
Achievement bonuses — when you unlock an achievement, bonus points are added to your total automatically. These are awarded once per achievement.
Leaderboard ranking — your rank is based on total lifetime points across all Laps and all check-ins.
Points are permanent — once earned, points are never deducted. Switching Laps does not affect your score.

Device & Browser Compatibility

Browser / Platform GPS QR Scan Notes
Safari on iPhone (iOS 16+) ✓ Good ✓ Good Recommended for iPhone users
Chrome on Android ✓ Good ✓ Good Best overall experience
Chrome on iPhone ~ Limited ~ Limited iOS limits GPS accuracy in non-Safari browsers
Firefox (Android) ✓ Good ~ Limited QR uses fallback scanner (jsQR)
Firefox (iPhone) ~ Limited ~ Limited Use Safari on iPhone for best results
Desktop browsers ✗ No GPS ~ Webcam GPS not available; QR needs webcam
🍎
iPhone users: always use Safari
Apple restricts GPS and camera access for third-party browsers on iPhone (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.). For full GPS check-in and QR scanning functionality on an iPhone, you must use Safari. Other browsers on iOS will have reduced accuracy or may not work at all.
📲
Add to Home Screen for the best experience
Installing Victory Lap Trail to your home screen gives you a full-screen, app-like experience with faster load times. On iPhone: open in Safari → tap the Share button (box with arrow) → scroll down → "Add to Home Screen." On Android: tap the three-dot menu in Chrome → "Add to Home Screen" or "Install App."
🌐
Internet connection required
Victory Lap Trail requires an active internet connection to check in, load the map, and sync your score. The app will not function in airplane mode or in areas with no cellular or Wi-Fi signal. Plan your trail visits accordingly if you're heading somewhere with limited coverage.
🔋
Battery usage
Continuous GPS tracking and an active camera for QR scanning can drain your battery faster than normal. We recommend starting trail visits with a full or near-full charge, or carrying a portable power bank on longer outings.

Stay Safe While Exploring

🚗
Never use this app while driving
Do not operate Victory Lap Trail while driving or operating any vehicle. Pull over safely and park before using the app, checking the map, or scanning QR codes. Distracted driving is dangerous and illegal. No check-in or points are worth your safety or the safety of others.
👀
Be aware of your surroundings at all times
Keep your head up and stay alert to traffic, pedestrians, curbs, and obstacles while navigating to locations. Do not walk while staring at your phone screen. Check the map, note your destination, then put your phone away while moving.
Traffic & roads — many trail locations are near or along active roads and parking areas. Always use crosswalks, obey pedestrian signals, and watch for turning vehicles.
Private property — some check-in zones may be adjacent to private property. Always stay on public sidewalks, walkways, and designated areas. Do not trespass to reach a location.
Weather awareness — check weather conditions before heading out, especially during Florida's afternoon storm season. Lightning, heavy rain, and extreme heat can make outdoor exploration dangerous.
Buddy system — consider exploring with a friend or group, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas. Let someone know where you're going.
Hydration — Daytona Beach can be extremely hot and humid. Bring water, wear sunscreen, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.
Personal items — keep your phone and valuables secure. Be mindful of your belongings in crowded or tourist areas.
Accessibility — some locations may have uneven pavement, stairs, or other obstacles. Check the location description for details before visiting if you have mobility concerns.
